September 2001: Just for Fun

Contributed by Richard J. Lester (click here for Mr. Lester's monthly columns)

Recently I was asked to participate in a guessing game. I thought it would be fair to ask readers the same questions, as I missed the correct answer completely.

Just for fun, can you guess which company with over 500 employees can boast the following statistics relating to its employees? The figures were compiled over three years ago, but turnover has since been slight.

29 have been accused of spousal abuse
7 have been arrested for fraud
117 have bankrupted at least two companies
19 have been convicted of writing bad checks
3 have been arrested for assault
71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
8 have been arrested for shoplifting
21 are current defendants in lawsuits
84 are subject to fines and incarceration for drunk driving

If you guessed the United States Congress, you were a better player than I.

Year after year, our 535-member United States Congress passes laws to keep the rest of us in tow. A friend recently dreamed up the figure that 87.6 percent of the company are crooks. Could this be true?
